At least thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
